In our recent work with Microsoft's Partners in Learning initiative, in addition to training, we have written annotated summaries of our selection of the 20 best books (plus five of our own) on leadership and change, and why we like them.

We have also identified 10 best websites which give access to tools, instruments and ideas for improving change leadership, and a statement on each of why we recommend these sites.

Learning to Lead Change: Building System Capacity
Leadership for Change Library

The top 20 books and five more …

Anyone’s list of top 20 books in a voluminous field like leadership and change is bound to contain personal preferences. Our selections reflect a bias for action or doing and our interest in deep, large-scale reform that sets the conditions for sustainability. In other words, we look for practical ideas that can take us some distance toward system transformation.

We also draw on different sectors and diverse disciplines. Thirteen of the 20 books are from the wider literature, and seven from education. Two books focus on emotional intelligence (Goleman, and Caruso & Salovey). Two are case studies of highly successful companies (Gittell, and Liker). Several are about leadership in complex and difficult times (Collins, Heifetz & Linsky, and Mintzberg). Several focus on the new leadership needed in education (Dufour et al., Elmore, Hargreaves & Fink, Lezotte & McKee, Reeves, and Wagner) . There are several great books on change and organizations (Abrahamson, Black & Gregerson, Kanter, Maurer, Loehr & Schwartz, Perkins, and Pfeffer & Sutton).

The 20 books are presented in alphabetical order by author. In each case we present an informal summary of the essence of the book, and then a short statement on why we like the book.

The 20 books are followed by an annotated summary of five of our recent books on leadership and change. All our work has the bias for action and large-scale system transformation. It draws on the best of leadership books, and also presents our own grounded work in partnerships with organizations and systems around the world.

Enjoy the reading. Better still, follow the best advice in the library — do the action and build on it!

Websites on leadership and change are numerous and vary in content and quality. Our selection for the website collection reflect a bias for action and doing, in line with our selections for The Leadership for Change Library. We look for websites that are rich and deep with both content and tools. We were also interested in websites that are easy to navigate while offering rich resources.

We have selected ten websites for Website Collection. Three websites give a country overview of leadership development activities, research, and resources (Australia, England, and United States). Three websites are connected to authors we reviewed in the Leadership for Change Library (Collins, Kanter, Mauer). The other four are composite leadership websites. Two websites bring together ideas of a number of writers on leadership (Drucker and Senge). The final two provide the user with access to the a variety of leadership resources and perspectives.

The 10 websites are presented in alphabetical order by website title. In each case, we present an introduction to the website and its features. We end each web review with a short statement on why we like this website. To see our reviews, click on the html or pdf link associated with each site.
