Australian Principals Association Professional Development Council (APAPDC)
Cost: Free

This national organization was formed in May 1993 to support principals' professional development. APAPDC brings together the government and non-government sectors, and the primary and secondary principals' associations. Readers will get an overview of school leadership organizations, professional development activities, leadership resources, and leadership projects ‘down under.’

Users will be introduced to the Australian L5 Frame which outlines five propositions about leadership:

  • leadership starts from within
  • leadership is about influencing others
  • leadership develops a rich learning environment
  • leadership builds professional and management capability
  • leadership inspires leadership action and aspirations in others

Click on “Projects” and you get an overview of the development and evaluation projects that the organization is involved in including:

  • Mind Matters – a mental health promotion resource for secondary schools
  • Wellspring – information on health and well being for younger students
  • Learn:Lead:Succeed – a resource to support the building of leadership in Australia
  • Leaders Matter – supports the well being of schools leaders
  • Leaders Work – is focused on strengthening and sustaining the work of school leaders

Click on “Resources” and you will find a number of packages to support school leaders. Some for sale, but most are available for downloading. Three examples: There are three resources related to the Leaders Matter project – an annotated bibliography on well-being; a 100-page Leaders Matter workbook (free for downloading); 12 case studies of Australian principals and their wellbeing. Users can also download chapters from a recent book, Leaders Lead: Beyond the Lost Sandshoe. In addition, there is a section on leadership standards. Here you can view not only Australian standards, but also leadership standards from the US, UK, Scotland, and NZ.
